Sandstone, sometimes known as Arenite, is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand sized grains of quartz and/or feldspar. Like sand, sandstone may be any colour with certain colours strongly identified with certain regions.
Sandstones are formed in 2 stages;
- Stage 1: Is the accumulation of layers of sand as a result of sedimentation
- Stage 2: The layers become compacted by pressure of overlying deposits and cemented by the precipitation of minerals within the pore spaces.
